Increasingly, uncertainty is no longer just a category for theoretical speculation. We know about uncertainty, particularly because we experience it in so many ways. There is virtually no person today who does not deal with uncertainty in some aspect of his or her life.
We have just remembered the coming of the Savior to this world, promised and awaited in the midst of uncertainty; and now we are preparing for the arrival of a new year. What will 2023 hold for us? How can faith encourage our journey in this time?
It will help us to know that the believing people, in both testaments, were not exempt from walking in the midst of uncertain days. I allow myself only a few references in Santiago and an invitation.
This wisdom letter was intended for the church everywhere, then and now, to encourage wise behavior in believers. In the midst of material, physical and spiritual difficulties, they needed wisdom:
- To withstand trials (1:2)
- Not to succumb to discouragement (1:8)
- To ask in faith (1:6)
- To be just and supportive (3:17)
- To formulate good plans (4:13)
- To live the lordship of Christ (4:16)
We entrust our future and our life into the best of hands: "You don't even know what tomorrow will be like! What is your life? Instead of being anxious, let us seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness (Mt 6:33-34). May the good and wise triune God assist us!
