Dr. Jessica Lugo Meléndez is the new Executive Director of the Association for Hispanic Theological Education.

Orlando, FL - December 18, 2023: The Board of Directors of the Association for Hispanic Theological Education, better known as AETH, announces the appointment of Rev. Dr. Jessica Lugo Meléndez as the new Executive Director of our organization effective January 1, 2024.

Dr. Oscar Merlo, Chairman of the Board of Directors, shares this exciting news, stating that; "Dr. Lugo's selection was a unanimous vote of the entire Search Committee, giving us full confidence in the discernment process that brought her to us. Dr. Lugo will help us reach new heights, build stronger partnerships and lead us to more meaningful impact. Together, we will continue to make a remarkable difference in the lives of those we serve." Dr. Merlo echoed the thoughts of the Search Committee, led by Dr. Luis Rivera, stating, "Dr. Lugo has extensive pastoral, educational and administrative experience in the Church, educational institutions and the world of private enterprise. She possesses a distinctive ability to reflect, relate and act pastorally, theologically and organizationally. She is approachable, can communicate with intercultural sensitivity and bilingually with multiple groups. She exhibits necessary competencies in strategic thinking, effective management and promoting innovation. Dr. Lugo has a special passion for youth and theological formation for a more compassionate, contextual and holistic Hispanic ministry".

Dr. Jessica Lugo Meléndez, comes to AETH with a wealth of experience in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors, having spent the last 20 years dedicated to causes that closely align with our own. Her passion for our mission and church and her impressive leadership track record made her the ideal candidate for this role. She applied for this position with a deep sense of calling, stating, "As mentioned in 1 Corinthians 3, I am convinced that, as God's co-workers, we can build bridges to further enhance AETH's outreach, strengthen its programs and equip Hispanic women, men, congregations, denominations and educational institutions alike to lead valuable lives for His glory." 

Dr. Lugo, a native of Puerto Rico, is an Ordained Minister of the American Baptist Churches and a professor in seminaries and universities. She holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in Preaching and Expository Teaching from Liberty University. She also holds a Master of Divinity degree from the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, a second Master of Business Administration degree from Ana G. Mendez University in PR and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the same institution. Dr. Lugo has held several pastoral roles within her denomination and is an active collaborator in multiple denominations and independent churches, to educate and build trained leaders for the Kingdom of God. She states that her most important role is that of servant. Dr. Lugo has been married to Joel Diaz for the past 23 years, and they are the proud parents of Joel Antonio (21) and Joel Manuel (17).
