Arise and shine!

Arise, shine, for your light has come and the glory of Jehovah has risen upon you! (Isaiah 60.1)

Chapters 60-62 of the book of Isaiah contain a series of promises and announcements about the salvation and restoration of Jerusalem. The return of the Jews scattered in exile is announced. This announcement of salvation anticipates the transformation of the historical circumstances of the Jewish people. These verses proclaim the manifestation of God’s presence. God appears at a particular time and place in history to save his people from the oppression of captivity in Babylon.

Chapter 60 begins with a call from the prophet to the city of Jerusalem. It expresses an imperative to him “Arise, shine! For your light has come, and the glory of the LORD shines upon you.” The prophet calls the people to rise up from their lethargy, to overcome discouragement, to stand up and illuminate their path with the confidence and certainty that the Lord will accompany them in the process of rebuilding and restoring the temple and the walls of Jerusalem.

The Christians of the first centuries interpreted this text as a prophecy of the arrival of Jesus the Messiah. In the New Testament the light that came into this world is Jesus Christ the Son of God. The evangelist John says in the first chapter; “The true light that enlightens all humanity was coming into this world” (1:9), and that light “shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not been able to put it out” (1:5). Jesus Christ is the light of the world. In the Bible, light is a symbol of salvation. Jesus Christ came to save us from our sins and eternal death through his death and resurrection, he came to transform the world and bring us a new hope of life and salvation. A new era is inaugurated in him, he is the model of a new humanity.

This word is an invitation for the church to arise and shine amid the darkness that surrounds a world full of violence, rejection of immigrants, that closes doors to those we see as different from us, that has become dehumanized. Getting up is building another possible world where there is peace, a dignified life, justice, and hope. The church must shine with the light of Christ and demonstrate the glimpses of the new humanity.

On a personal level it is an invitation to get out of our captivity, from what enslaves us, to leave self-pity, our crying for the past, for what could have been and was not. It’s time to arise and shine because your light has come!
