The price of the cross

19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

Colossians 1:19-20

In my teenage years I lived through the traumatic experience of being assaulted. Three young men approached me and forcibly stripped me of a gold chain with a cross. I remember the feeling of loss; that cross had a great sentimental meaning since my mother had given it to me.

The Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the word emblem as a device, symbol, or figure adopted and used as an identifying mark. Now, we might wonder: How the cross, being an instrument of death and destruction, has become an emblem of the redemptive sacrifice of Christ for humanity? What spiritual benefits do believers experience as a result of our Lord Jesus Christ voluntarily surrendering to death on the cross?

The cross is the high price that Christ had to pay for our redemption. This price represents the beginning of a reorientation in the way believers face their lives in relation to themselves and others. Death on the cross not only has a transforming effect on people’s lives but also on powers and authorities of a declining world opposed to the principles of love and justice. By means of the cross, the believer dies to a way of life oriented by his or her particular interests. Through faith in the death of Jesus Christ, believers are released from having to pay for their sins. True faith, that of real commitment to God, frees us from punishment we deserve.

May the commemoration of today’s Good Friday serve to bring us closer to the One who being God, took on the human condition and humbled himself so that you and I could enjoy an abundant life.

Let’s celebrate we are justified by faith!
